1842 Braided Hair Cent
The only Necomb number known for the 1842 Proof Braided Hair Cents is Newcomb-1. Walter Breen considered a few large date examples (N-3) to be Proofs, but those have since been discredited as coins struck from later state lapped dies that have fresh-looking prooflike fields. Denis Loring has only identified about 10 specimens in Proof format during his extensive research.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the July 2015 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $25,850.
