1828 Capped Head Left Half Eagle
The 1828 half eagle is nearly one of the rarest of the type and is seen with about the same frequency as its 1828/7 counterpart. Fewer than a dozen examples of the date have been certified. In terms of rarity, this coin falls behind only the 1815, 1822, 1825/4, 1828/7, and 1829 Large Date. The Smithsonian Institute holds a single example, believed to be MS-63.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the D. Brent Pogue Part IV Auction, where it realized $458,250.
