1827 Capped Head Left Half Eagle
Very few of 1827 Capped Head half eagles survive. With an original mintage of 24,913, our experts suggest that as few as 20 to 24 pieces may remain, which appears to be consistent with the number of coins certified by the leading grading services. A large majority of the surviving coins are found in Mint State condition. The Smithsonian has three examples in their collection: two uncirculated coins (likely MS-62 and MS-63), and one that some have suggested could be a proof. Our experts believe it is more likely a prooflike example.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the D. Brent Pogue Part IV Auction, where it realized $211,500.
