1826 Capped Head Left Half Eagle
Another in a series of half eagle issues that saw mass export and melting, the vast majority of the 18,069 coins struck in 1826 (from only two die pairs) went to Europe. The two die pairings are differentiated by the location of the 13th star in relation to the lowest curl of Liberty's hair. Even though the BD-1 (with the star placed low and closer to the date) is by far the more available of the two, this is still a relative term with Bass and Dannreuther estimating that fewer than 40 coins are known. By comparison, the BD-2 is extraordinarily rare with only three thought known.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the D. Brent Pogue Part IV Auction, where it realized $446,500.
