Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Coin Resource Center includes an entry on a distinctive, though relatively common, Matron Head large cent: the 1817 15 Stars variety. As its name suggests, there are 15 stars encircling Liberty’s bust on the obverse. Experts attribute the differing number of obverse stars to an engraving error, where the stars were placed too closely together. This is the only Matron Head large cent included in the CRC at time of writing.
The 1817 15-Star large cent listing includes a brief history of the variety’s desirability to large cent collectors and offers historical prices. Listings for individual large cent dates are broken down by type and strike finish (circulation and proof).
This listing includes high-quality images of an 1817 15 Stars large cent and a link to recent auction appearances of the variety. Links at the bottom of the page offer the opportunity to report an error as well as a way to contact Stack’s Bowers Galleries in the event that a viewer has an example that they would like to sell and/or have appraised.
