Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Coin Resource Center includes entries on key dates for many U.S. series, including the 1928 Peace silver dollar. Its small mintage (the series’ smallest) was the result of the Pittman Act’s provision that silver dollars be struck until the 270 million Morgan dollars melted in 1918 (also under the terms of the Pittman Act) were replaced. In 1928, the supply of silver purchased under the terms of the Pittman Act ran out and production ended, resulting in the 360,649-coin mintage at the Philadelphia Mint, although more were struck at the San Francisco Mint. The 1928-S is much more common than its counterpart without a mintmark.
Our CRC listing discusses the date’s desirability and availability in various grades. The date, already the undisputed key of the series, is a challenging coin in Gem and above.
Like other CRC listings, the listing on the 1928 Peace dollar includes high-quality images (in this case, an example that sold in our March 2021 Showcase Auction), and links to recent auction results, a page to submit corrections, and a page to contact our staff if readers have an example.
