Coin Resource Center Includes Entry on 1839-C Half Eagle

Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Coin Resource Center includes entries on a handful of No Motto Liberty Head half eagles, among them the 1839-C. The second date of the denomination produced at the newly-opened branch mint at Charlotte, North Carolina, the 1839-C is a notable early date of Christian Gobrecht’s newly-introduced type.

The CRC splits its Liberty Head half eagle entries into the series’ two major subtypes: No Motto and With Motto (in reference to the “IN GOD WE TRUST” motto on a ribbon added above the eagle’s head on the reverse in 1866). At the time of writing, the CRC includes listings on the 1839, 1839-D, 1842-C, and 1866-S in addition to the 1839-C. The CRC is an evolving database, and more dates will be added in the future.

The entry includes a brief discussion of the issue’s history and collectability, as well links to recent auction listings and a Coins in Motion animation of a notable example that we auctioned in 2022. The pages covering the denomination and the No Motto subtype include history relevant to the 1839-C and some discussion of collectability that bears on the date as well.

Interested readers might also consider looking at the CRC page covering the Charlotte Mint facility.
