The weekly iAuctions here at Stack’s Bowers Galleries are a great source for collectible coins! Every month (closing on the first Sunday of the month) our iAuctions will contain World and/or Ancient coins, including some notable pieces such as this silver Denier from the Carolingian ruler Charles the Simple. Don’t let the epithet “Simple” fool you, Charles was not dim-witted. The Latin “Simplex” is most accurately translated to mean “Straight-forward”, so “Charles the Decisive” might be a more fitting sobriquet.
The obverse follows the established Carolingian pattern for silver Deniers, with a standard cross emblazoned in the center, surrounded by a circular beaded border, with the legend stating: “CARLVS REXR” Latin for “King Charles.” The legend begins with a Cross as well, useful in locating the start of the inscription. The reverse design features an inscription stating the mint’s location, in this case “Melle” surrounded by a beaded border. This piece displays a nice strike and appealing dark toning. It is one of many intriguing pieces to be found in our iAuction, so be sure to take a look
