Lovely PCGS-Graded MS-64+ 1824 Capped Bust Half Dollar

The Capped Bust half dollar ranks among my favorite type coins in the U.S. series, and was the first area of numismatics on which I focused my collecting interest. As such, whenever a lovely Bust half, regardless of numeric grade, comes my way, I take the opportunity to review it. The 1824 half dollar being offered as lot 21100 in our iAuction 3524 deserves such attention.

Graded MS-64+ by PCGS and boasting a green CAC “bean” of approval, this lovely coin is well suited for an advanced set of early half dollars, or to reside in a well selected type set. The 1824 as a year is fairly common, with over 3.5 million pieces struck, using 17 different die marriages, of which two are classified as Rarity-5 by Overton-Parsley. This coin was struck using the pairing of obverse 14 and reverse P, identifying it as an O-117, one of the more plentiful varieties of the year. But, at the assigned grade, this piece falls within the Condition Census for the variety.

Soft luster shines from behind the light dusting of toning in varying shades of gray, russet, gold, and blue. Some light areas of striking weakness (as made) are normal for the date. Overall this half dollar is very appealing and worthy of you consideration. View and bid on this coin along with all the items in our current iAuction at StacksBowers.com.
