One of the more popular collecting themes among medals is architecture, with the attractive and powerfully intricate series produced by the brothers Wiener leading the way. Featuring a large 59mm format that allowed ample space to pack as much design as possible into each medal, these items generate massive appeal, with places of worship such as the Cologne Synagogue, Notre Dame of Paris, and St. Isaac’s in St. Petersburg leading the way. The Wieners, however, weren’t the only such medalists to focus upon the exteriors and interiors of edifices in a highly skilled manner, as others, such as Bianchi in Rome and Davis in Birmingham, also issued attractive (and sometimes more seldom seen) architectural medals contemporaneous to the Wieners. Our upcoming November 2022 World & Ancient Collectors Choice Online (CCO) auction will feature a number of these powerful and tantalizing medals, with the highlights above certainly leading the way.
