The live sessions of our Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio April 2014 Hong Kong Showcase Auction are completed. Suffice it to say that we experienced a tremendous turnout with two days of intensive live bidding sessions. However, there is still time to bid in this remarkable sale. The Internet Session for Asian and World Coins, Session D, runs now through Tuesday, April 8, and ends promptly at 8 p.m. PT. A large variety of coins comprise this session and many hidden treasures await the diligent bidder!
As a recap of our live session, one piece in particular far exceeded our conservative estimates: Lot 30095 from Session A of world coins. This piece hails from Indonesia, specifically from the island of Java, in the Kedu Plain region. When this unassuming silver ingot came to our office, I was tasked to research it and provide any information I could. I admittedly could find very little information pertaining to this piece and our team had never encountered such an item before. Kyle Ponterio, one of our numismatists with a great interest in Asian coins and currencies, was finally able to decipher the mystery of this piece. With a conservative estimate of $300 – $500, we sent this item to the auction. Our team was ecstatic when it realized over 10 times the high estimate!
In preparation for our internet session, here is a brief listing of the types of items featured in that session: Ancient Chinese coins, Sycee, coins from the Chinese Empire, Republic of China, a large and diverse group of Provincial issues, medals, and a good sized assembly of modern Chinese coins. In addition to these Chinese coins the internet session also includes a variety of other Asian countries and coin-issuing authorities, including: Annam/Vietnam and French Indo-China, British Trade Dollars, Hong Kong issues, Japanese, Korean and Thai coinage, and various Straits Settlements and other South-East Asian countries. All in all it is a very interesting and potentially rewarding session so be sure to check it out!
Pre-bidding has begun for these coins and medals. While our Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio April Hong Kong Showcase Auction is closed for further consignments, we are currently accepting consignments of world and ancient coins as well as world paper money for our 2014 August Hong Kong and August ANA sales. If you are interested in consigning your coins and paper currency (whether a whole collection or a single rarity) be sure to contact one of our consignment directors.
