Happenings in the New York Store:
We are always thrilled to welcome new collectors into our wonderful hobby. This week we were pleased to meet a very special young man. Jacob came in with his dad to look at some coins for his collection. He told me that he specializes in Lincoln cents, but he has nothing before 1944 and he would love to acquire some older coins. I had to ask this very precocious eight-year-old how long he has been collecting coins and he very proudly told me "oh, I have been collecting for a few days now!" Talk about new to the hobby!
We usually don’t have circulated Lincoln cents for sale in the store as we generally wholesale that type of material out. However, fortunately for Jacob, we had recently bought a sparsely filled Whitman Lincoln Wheat cent album from one client and a large group of individual Wheat cents from another. He and his dad went through some of the individual coins to fill in the holes. Jacob said he wanted a 1909-S. We did have this, but his dad said it was a bit over the budget at this time. They did purchase some semi-key coins to fill in the album and plan to make regular visits to the store when they can.
I wish that a visit like this was not so rare. When I was growing up, everyone I knew collected something – coins, stamps, baseball cards, comic books, and the list goes on. But today that has changed dramatically, and it is rare that we find a young man looking to collect coins, or collect anything for that matter. We are so glad to see the interest and enthusiasm of a kid discovering the joys of collecting. Looking forward to working with Jacob and his dad in the future!
