Question: I have a very nice 1924 Huguenot-Walloon commemorative half dollar. I noticed that on the reverse at the upper left there is a bright or polished looking area. I studied this under magnification and it seems to me that it is the way it was struck. Is this possible?
Answer: You are right. The actual polishing was done on the die, probably inadvertently, with the result that nearly all Huguenot half dollars have this same feature. Your coin, far from being an oddity, is actually the norm for this particular issue.
