Rare Norway Specie Daler

The Stack’s Bowers Chicago ANA World’s Fair of Money Auction to be held this August is certainly shaping up into a wonderful event. With a wide variety of rare and collectible coins from all around the world there is sure to be something to entice collectors of all specialties. For the Scandinavian collector, we will offer a Rare Norway Specie Daler with significant historical significance. Similar to last week’s preview of the 16th Century German Taler from Trier, today’s coin is from a time in Europe when religious fanaticism and ignorance were prevalent. Many unfortunate women were murdered across the world as part of witch hunts. This coin was struck in 1662, the same year the Vardo Witch Trials in Norway took place. The trials spanned a considerable portion of the 17th century, simultaneous to the witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts. The 1662 trials resulted in 20 being burned alive at the stake or tortured to death, for alleged sorcery and making pacts with the devil.

This rare Specie Daler bears a regal and seasoned right facing bust of Frederick III, who ruled as the King of Denmark and Norway from 1648 to 1670. His titles are found in the legend around; “FRIDERICUS III D G DAN NOR VA GO REX”. The reverse features the crowned lion rampant wielding an ax facing left, within a wreath, with “PROVIDEBIT DOMINUS” around the outside of the wreath. The date of 1662 appears below the intersection of the wreath. Some light corrosion is present on the reverse, though Almost-Uncirculated details are present throughout. This rare and historically rich Specie Daler is sure to attract spirited bidding once it reaches the auction podium.
