Among the nearly 60 lots of U.S. currency featured in this month’s Stack’s Bowers Galleries iAuction are nine lots of National banknotes from the state of Michigan. Among those lots is a scarce 1902 $10 Red Seal from the National City Bank of Grand Rapids, Charter # 3293. The note, graded Fine 12 by PMG, is one of three such $10 Red Seals known on the bank. The overprint remains a bold cherry red despite the level of circulation. The note, which is lot 21063 in the auction, carries an estimate of $375 to $575.
An 1882 $5 Brown Back from the Old National Bank of Grand Rapids, Charter #2890, is also being offered in the auction. It is one of six $5 Brown Backs known from this large size only Michigan bank. That note, which grades Very Good, is found in lot 21062 and is estimated at $200 to $400. Other Michigan towns with notes featured in the auction are Munising, Sturgis, Gladstone, Negaunee, Calumet and Bay City.
