Stack’s Bowers Galleries is pleased to present our Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Summer Expo this July 16-19 in Baltimore. Among the many paper highlights is an example of the rare Fr. 1700 1933 $10 Silver Certificate graded Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ by PMG. The 1933 $10 Silver Certificate is a one-year design type and only 552,000 were printed by the BEP. Around one-third of those were actually released into circulation and shortly thereafter legislation required a change in the redeemable language of the Silver Certificates.
The 1933 Tens were redeemable in “Silver Coin,” whereas the new notes were to be redeemable for any form of silver. A new design for the $10 Silver Certificate entered circulation for the Series of 1934 and the Treasury Department immediately began to withdraw the 1933 dated notes from circulation. By 1935 only about 15,000 remained outstanding. Just over 50 examples are known today, making it one of the rarest of all small size design types and a key note to any small size currency collection.
This example is truly exceptional with ample margins, bold inks and paper as bright and crisp as they day it was printed. Pedigreed to the collection of Doug Kaselitz, this wonderful gem note carries an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000.
