The Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the August 2014 ANA World’s Fair of Money is just around the corner and the currency staff at Stack’s Bowers Galleries have been hard at work putting together a wonderful auction of rare and exciting material for bidding competition. The paper money market is strong right now and demand is high for rare and highly desirable notes. With over $6 million in rare currency set to cross the auction block, bidders are sure to find many notes to satisfy their collecting appetites.
For starters, one of the greatest items available for private ownership will once again be sold. The inaugural set of 1896 $1, $2 and $5 Educational Series Sheets, each with serial numbers 1 through 4, will be offered to the collecting public. Each sheet is graded and encapsulated About Uncirculated 55 by PMG.
An important offering of select notes from The Anderson Collection will appeal to buyers of rare Federal type notes. Among many highlights from that offering is the only privately held Fr. 1191 1882 $50 Gold Certificate. The large, peach spiked seal note is the only one of four known not permanently impounded in a government collection and is graded Extremely Fine 40 by PCGS. A Fr. 1203 1882 $100 Gold Certificate, one of just three known and also unique in private hands, is graded PCGS Fine 15. In addition, an example of the iconic 1863 “Spread Eagle” $100 Legal Tender Note will be offered. The Fr. 167b is graded Very Fine 25 by PCGS. A high grade Fr. 1219e 1907 $1,000 Gold Certificate will also cross the block. This beautiful note is graded Choice Uncirculated 64 by PMG.
A number of exceptional Obsolete proof notes will be featured in the auction as parts of the Crusader Collection and the Peter Mayer Collection. From the Crusader Collection comes a rare Uncirculated 1860 $100 proof from Prescott Bank of Lowell, Massachusetts. An Uncirculated 1856 $5 Face and Back Color proof pair from the Niagara County Bank of Lockport, New York will delight bidders as will a very rare Uncirculated and undated $1000 proof from the Mechanics Bank of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Offered from the important Peter Mayer Collection are many desirable proofs from the Northeast, featuring rare and intriguing vignettes and attractive color proofs. Included is an Uncirculated 1860 $20 proof from the Revere Bank of Boston, Massachusetts. From New York City banks come an undated Gem Uncirculated $50 proof from the Artisans Bank and an undated Choice Uncirculated $3 proof from the Knickerbocker Bank. An undated Uncirculated $100 proof from the Union Bank of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is also among the many great notes in the collection.
