Mint State 1937-D 3-Legged Buffalo Nickel

This week’s iAuctions coin of the week is an example of the perennially popular 1937-D 3-Legged Buffalo nickel in NGC MS-61. This variety, known even outside of numismatic circles, was created when an employee named Mr. Young at the Denver Mint effaced the reverse die with an emery board in an effort to remove clash marks. Fortunately for numismatists, his unbridled enthusiasm removed more than the clash marks, taking with them the Buffalo’s right front leg. The error was probably not discovered early, as most survivors are apt to be in the VF-EF range, with AU and Uncirculated coins being scarce. We are happy to offer this nickel-gray example that displays lovely golden-russet accents, particularly on the reverse. The details are bluntly struck as usually seen on this variety. A nice coin for the collector who wants to obtain a Mint State example without breaking the budget.
