Certified by NGC, this Bela Lyon Pratt-designed half eagle is the final gold issue of any denomination from the New Orleans Mint, adding to its fame and desirability. Only 34,200 examples of the date were struck, far and away the lowest production tally of any date in the series. The typical 1909-O half eagle tends to be an evenly circulated EF to AU coin – the demand for Mint State pieces far outstrips the supply for the date as few become available in the numismatic marketplace. The final year of the series, 1929, is a great rarity, as most of its mintage was melted before any massive distribution could ensue. The 1909-O soars in value at every stop on the price guides until, at MS-63 or so, it becomes the ready equal to the 1929 rarity.
