The 1904 and 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition gold dollars celebrate the adventures of the Corps of Discovery and its charting and exploratory expedition to the Pacific Northwest a century earlier. Ordered by President Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark’s expedition opened the new frontier in America after the Louisiana Purchase. What better way to celebrate the centennial of such an auspicious and historical event than with a gold coin?
Struck in two years, the Lewis and Clark Exposition gold dollar was designed by Charles E. Barber and features the busts of Lewis and Clark, one on either side, with appropriate legends around. Proceeds from the sale of the gold dollars went toward a bronze memorial to the Indian maiden Sacagawea who was instrumental in the success of the Corps and served as a buffer between the American expedition and several Native American tribes they encountered along the way.
