Handsome T-64 1864 $500 PF-3 Offered in This Week’s Currency iAuction

One of the many great lots being offered in this week’s Currency iAuction is a scarce PF-3 variety 1864 $500 Confederate note. These late-issue, high-denomination notes feature an interpretation of the Great Seal of the Confederate States that appears on the left side of the note with the motto “Deo Vindice” which translates to “Under God, Our Vindicator.” Also featured on the note is a bold portrait of Confederate Lt. General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

Jackson was one of Robert E. Lee’s most trusted commanders and many historians consider him to be one of the brightest military commanders in U.S. history. After building a reputation as a skilled and heroic commander at the battles of Chancellorsville, First and Second Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg, he was wounded in a friendly fire incident at the Battle of Chancellorsville. He succumbed to pneumonia related to the injury eight days later on May 10, 1863.

The PF-3 variety of the 1864 $500 is distinguished by a dark red underprint that is seen on notes in the 35,000 to 39,000 serial number range.

A bold deep red underprint is found on the offered example, which is evenly circulated and has been graded Very Fine 30 by PCGS.
