Choice AU-58 Type II 1855-O Gold Dollar Glitters Boldly In Our Next iAuction

Type II gold dollars were struck in just three years, 1854, 1855 and 1856, with the 1854 date issued only in Philadelphia and the 1856 date issued only in San Francisco. That leaves the middle date of the three, 1855, which was produced in Philadelphia, as well as at the branch mints in Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. All of the dates are widely sought by both gold dollar collectors and type set devotees.

The current iAuction event features a pleasing Choice AU-58 1855-S Type II gold dollar for your bidding consideration. Its smooth rose-gold surfaces exhibit lively luster in the protected design areas, and both sides are fairly mark-free despite the light circulation. As with most New Orleans issues of the era, the coins were used heavily in circulation, and today nearly all dates of the era from our southernmost mint can be considered scarce to rare in Mint State.

Enter the AU-58 1855-O gold dollar offered in our iAuction. One of 55,000 examples struck, it is a pleasing survivor. The date is often selected to represent the Type II gold dollar in advanced type sets where the owners enjoy a mix of mintmarks in their holdings. Most importantly, however, it will no doubt realize a “hammer” price in our sale far lower than the same date in Mint State. That is the beauty of the AU-58 grade.

If you are a regular bidder in our iAuction events, welcome back! If this is your first time, we’re certain you’ll enjoy the action and be back for more the next time around! Either way, we wish you the best of luck when you bid in our current iAuction.
