Struck from 1695-1697 and again in 1700, the Crowns of William III are a tough series to collect, and the 1697 is the hardest date of the series to acquire in nice grade. While there are several different varieties for most years, there is only one for this date. In our Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio official auction at the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Baltimore Expo, we are pleased to offer an example of this rare date graded EF-40 and encapsulated in a PCGS Secure holder. The coin is attractively toned but does display some weakness in strike, which can be overlooked when its rarity is considered. This would make a lovely addition to any collection of English Crowns, and should be viewed by the specialist. Lot viewing will be held in our New York office Thursday-Saturday November 8-10, and beginning in Baltimore on November 12. The session begins on Thursday, November 15 at 9 AM Eastern Time. We hope to see you at the auction. This and all lots can be seen online at www.stacksbowers.com.
