Our upcoming August 2024 Global Showcase Auction will feature countless treasures from across the numismatic spectrum, including Part II of the revered and highly anticipated Richard Margolis Collection. While Part I this past March focused on Numismatic Americana, Part II will focus specifically upon French Patterns, Trials, and Numismatic Curiosities from the reign of Louis XVI to the end of the Consulate, 1774-1804. Within this volatile three decades, an immense corpus of coin designs and coining ideas was created. Margolis was a dutiful and faithful collector of not only these disparate types, but their history and significance as well.
Among the monumental rarities is an exceedingly intriguing bimetallic pattern struck in silver and copper. Featuring an outer ring of copper paired with an inner center of silver, this stunning bimetallic issue has had its status questioned by the authors of T&T, an authoritative reference on the pattern coinage of Napoleon, due to an inability to see the Raoul Kraft example (the one which they cite for the type) in a format other than through a catalog image that is more than 60 years old. This specimen is the Kraft example, and certainly provides no evidence of later manufacture or a fanciful veneer to accomplish the bimetallic appearance. As such, it is an important missing link that confirms the type, as well as a monumental and extremely impressive offering for collectors of patterns and trials, minor coinage, or Napoleonica.
