Classic Rarities and Modern Bitcoin Treasures

Our Bitcoin Halving Sale earlier this month achieved over $1.7 million in prices realized and now ranks as our largest crypto sale yet. The sale offered some interesting comparisons between rarities from the Physical Bitcoin category and those from more traditional coin series sold in our other auction sessions.

Among the crypto highlights was a silver 2013 Casascius 1 Bitcoin from the Jimmy Song Collection that sold for $102,000 and set a new record for the most valuable Casascius 1 Bitcoin of any type. This unprecedented result was matched by two classic rarities including a unique Proof 1839 With Drapery Liberty Seated half dollar and a 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition Round $50, each of which brought $102,000.

Another record was set by a brass 2011 Casascius 1 Bitcoin that sold for $96,000, which now ranks as the most valuable brass Casascius 1 Bitcoin of any date or variety. This price was shared by two gold $10 eagles in the sale including a 1795 Capped Bust Right, 13 Leaves eagle and a Gem Proof 1904 Liberty Head eagle from the Simpson Collection.

Lealana coins also performed strongly, with a 2013 Lealana 0.5 Bitcoin selling for $45,600. This result was on par with a fantastic 1795 Flowing Hair silver dollar and also a Top-Pop Gem 1913 Indian half eagle.

A pattern 2013 Lealana 0.25 Bitcoin sold for $25,200 as one of only two known in private hands. This result was matched by a more traditional pattern 1878 Standard dollar in silver,  Judd-1554a variety, of which only four are known. A spectacular 1867 Liberty Head double eagle that is tied for Condition Census #2 also sold for the same amount.

With over $1.7 million sold in our Bitcoin Halving Sale and nearly $6.5 million in crypto items sold to date, collectors are clearly welcoming this category into the canon of numismatics. We are now in the final stages of production for our June crypto auction, which will be the first dedicated crypto sale to take place post-Halving. Additional sales are scheduled for later this year in August and November.  We will also have a booth at the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville in July where we will be accepting select auction consignments and displaying upcoming highlights. As always, I can be reached at JMcCartney@StacksBowers.com for any questions on this category.
