As our May Collectors Choice Online auction of Ancient and World Coins draws near, we are pleased to feature an important collection of the first Republican coinage of Mexico, the profile or “Hookneck” eagle series, as assembled by Richard Elliott. As a long time 8 Reales collector, Elliott gained new inspiration to build his reference collection of these historically important coins in 1997 after the release of the outstanding bi-lingual reference “Hookneck; El Aguila de Perfil” written by Clyde Hubbard and David O’Harrow. In this standard reference the history and all known die varieties were laid out in a logical manner and published for the first time. A work of this magnitude had never been attempted before, and even as extensive as it was, the authors stated that more varieties would be found.
Soon after the book’s release and for the next four years, Elliott collaborated with his two friends, resulting in the 2001 publication of the “Supplement.” Among other important contributions, Elliott discovered several previously unknown varieties, some of which are included in our present offering of his collection. He continued collecting actively for another 15 or more years after the publication of the “Supplement,” discovering additional varieties that had never been published. These are referred to as “Unlisted” and are indicated on the NGC label as HOH (designation for Hubbard and O’Harrow “Hookneck” variety numbering system) UNL (unlisted).
