Lot 7164 of the Summer 2022 Global Showcase Auction Rarities Night Sale features an 1839-C Liberty Head half eagle, from the first year of that design. Our catalogers noted something very important with this coin: The coin shows a distinctively fine strike and surface quality, which is uncommon for these coins, even in this condition. This led our experts to believe that this could be a possible specimen striking. Furthermore, on the reverse we have noted that there are raised parallel die polish lines that are evidence of special preparation of the die and add to the reflectivity of the coin. Books by Doug Winter, Jeff Garrett, and Ron Guth also point out the exceptional striking of this coin and raise the question of this coin being some sort of presentation piece.
