South Russia 1920 5 Rubles Remainder Offered in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries August 2021 Auction

Our official World
Paper Money auction
for the ANA World’s Fair of Money will feature lot
30437
, a South Russia 5 Rubles P-S437 ND (1920) in PCGS Banknote About
Uncirculated 55.

The White Russian Army lost the city of Sevastopol, located
in the Crimean Peninsula, in November of 1920. The White Army was forced to
evacuate the peninsula and thus gave up the Southern Front to the Red Army.
This note was intended to be issued in 1920 by the South Russian Government, however
the series was never issued due to the loss of Crimea. Interestingly, this
series was printed by Waterlow & Sons in London, and the offered example
appears to be an unfinished remainder, with only the front design printed. The
reverse print is completely missing but should have displayed the Imperial
Russian double headed eagle design. The paper is watermarked with a mosaic
design. Scarce, and likely missing from most South Russia or Russian Civil War
paper money collections.
