Old Friends Set New Records at the Stack’s Bowers Galleries sale of the Miller Collection, Part Two

Our recent sale of the Larry H. Miller Collection, Part Two
featured some of the greatest rarities in U.S. numismatics, including
incredible sets of early silver dollars, Barber coinage, and Mormon gold. This
selection realized over $14.5 million as part of our December 2020 Showcase
auction, and brought the total prices realized for the Larry H. Miller
Collection to more than $23.5 million.

Acquiring coins discretely and off the radar of the
collecting community, the late Larry H. Miller assembled a world-class cabinet
that spanned nearly the entire Guide Book of United States Coins. We had
the pleasure of previously handling many of these rarities in our 85-year
history, and we were thrilled to present them once again as part of the Miller
Collection.

The top price of Part Two was earned by the Proof-65 (PCGS)
1804 Class I Original Draped Bust dollar that sold for $3,360,000,
a new record for this grade level. This coin is among the finest of eight known
survivors and was acquired directly from the U.S. Mint in 1843 by collector
Matthew Stickney. We previously sold this coin in our April 1997 sale of the legendary
Eliasberg Collection for $1,815,000,
which was also its last public auction appearance.

The incredible Proof-65 (NGC) CAC 1894-S Barber dime
garnered the second highest price of the night at $1,440,000,
also a new record for the grade. It is one of the best of the nine known
examples; the founder of CAC, John Albanese, recognized it as his “favorite.” This
coin was featured in our May 1996 sale of the Eliasberg
Collection
, and last appeared at auction in
our 65th Anniversary Sale of October 2000 where it realized $431,250.

The magnificent suite of Mormon gold in the sale attracted
considerable notice as one of the finest sets ever assembled. The highlight of
this group was the 1849 Mormon $10 graded AU-53 (PCGS) CAC, which set a new
all-time record for the issue at $840,000.
Pedigreed to the famous collection of Col. E.H.R. Green, we last had the
privilege of offering it in our January 1984 sale of the Amon G. Carter, Jr.
Family Collection, where it sold for $132,000.

With over $23.5 million in prices realized across both parts
of the Larry H. Miller Collection, we are encouraged by the continued strength
of the numismatic market as we look ahead to our 2021 auction season. Our March
2021 Baltimore Auction is already poised to be an impressive event. If you
would like to consign your collection to our March 2021 event or have questions
