The Saint-Gaudens double eagle is among the most popular coin
series struck by the U.S. Mint, reflecting a combination of intrinsic value,
historic significance, and iconic artistry. First issued in 1907 as part of
President Roosevelt’s pet project to revitalize America’s coinage, this series was
the result of his collaboration with the famous Irish-American sculptor
Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The High Relief version with Roman Numerals struck in
1907 is often considered a high-water mark for U.S. numismatics, while the modified
production version struck later in the year and continuing through 1933 remains
an object of desire among classic gold specialists and type collectors. In
fact, the iconic torch-bearing Liberty design from the Saint-Gaudens double
eagle was resurrected in 1986 on the American Gold Eagle bullion coinage, making
this design type immediately recognizable to collectors of every category and
generation.
A number of significant Gem Saint-Gaudens double eagles are
featured in Session
3 of our December 2020 Auction. These coins are from the Naples
Bay Collection, a magnificent group of United States type coins that was
assembled from the 1950s through the 1980s and privately held ever since. The
Naples Bay Collection showcases some of the most iconic rarities from the early
United States Mint, as well as from the later Morgan dollar, Peace dollar, and
Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. Our initial offering from this collection in
