Our upcoming October Hong Kong sale
features a vast array of paper money from China and Hong Kong, among which is a
Hong Kong P-240c 1941 50 Dollars note issued by the Mercantile Bank of India
Limited (lot
50277). A scarcer date, 1941, is found on this note, adding to the
appeal. This piece displays still bright color and detail that stands out for
the technical grade. Two printed signatures are found on the face, along with
two serial numbers on the back. At left is a portrait vignette, along with
rayed under-print in blue, yellow, green and purple. A vignette seen of a man
at left, and also in the watermark on the right of the note. A temple is featured on the reverse,
along with intricate lathe work that makes up the border
design. The note offered in our October 2020 Hong Kong auction is in
an attractive mid-grade state of preservation. PMG has encapsulated just 12
examples of this variety at the time of cataloging, with none graded finer than
this example. It is scarce and sure to attract attention from
advanced collectors of Hong Kong paper money.
