The 1870 half dime is one of the final Philadelphia Mint
issues of this denomination and serves as a popular type candidate from the
Legend Obverse portion of the series. A quick glance at the certified
population data published by PCGS and NGC, confirms that survivors are anything
but common in the finest Mint State grades. Even at the MS-65 level this issue
is scarce, and finer grades are rare.
We are delighted to offer a gorgeous Superb Gem180 half
dime in our August 2020 Collectors Choice Online Auction. It is certified MS-67
by PCGS and approved by CAC; just four have been graded finer by PCGS. It would
be an ideal addition to an advanced Registry Set or specialized collection of
this series.
Beautifully toned in mottled reddish-apricot, olive-russet
and cobalt blue, this half dime displays satiny mint luster, smooth surfaces
and nearly full striking detail. Visually impressive and among the most
technically superior of its kind, it is sure to sell for a very strong bid.
This MS-67 (PCGS) CAC 1870 half dime will be offered in our
August 2020 Collectors Choice Online Auction, an offering that is highlighted
by the Big Sky Collection of Montana Tokens, Part II. Featuring over 100 lots,
this selection from the Big Sky Collection offers many pieces assigned a rating
of Rarity-8 or Rarity-9 by specialist Roy D. Rubick. Our August 2020 Collectors
Choice Online Auction will close live online at www.StacksBowers.com on August 20,
beginning at 9:00 AM PT. Contact us today to consign your specialized
collection to a future Collectors Choice Online event!
