Our annual Spring Hong Kong auction is in the final stages of production and we are preparing for the event to be held from March 25-28, 2019, at the Mira Hotel, in conjunction 6th Hong Kong Coin Show (HKCS). Featured here is an impressive modern Chinese highlight of the auction: Lot # 61075 – a highly desirable gold Kilo-weight Panda coin with a face value of 2000 Yuan from a mintage of just 68 pieces.
Like every issue from this series, the obverse displays a stylized rendition of a Panda. On the front, this type depicts a Panda perched atop a stone with bamboo shoots to the right and below; the denomination appears to the left, with the ".9999" purity and weight above. The back displays the standard design, featuring the Temple of Heaven encircled within a solid border, the Chinese inscription above as "国和共民人华中" (Guó hé gòng mín rén huázhōng [People’s Republic of China]) and the date below. Inspection reveals this to be the "Large Date" variety with serif on the "1" of the date indicating this piece was struck at the Shenzhen GuoBao Mint.
Famous numismatic author Peter Anthony, who authored the Gold & Silver Panda Coin Buyer’s Guide, states that this year’s mintage figures were split between three mints: Shanghai (Small Date), Shenyang (Large Date) and Shenzhen GuoBao (Large Date with Serif), and describes the differences between each mint’s product. Being that this piece is a "Large Date with Serif," it is also a slightly more desirable variety of an already very rare large denomination issue.
For collectors seeking elite issues from this universally collected series, this coin offers an important combination of intrinsic value and absolute rarity.
