This week’s preview for the Stack’s Bowers Galleries October Collectors Choice Online Auction featuring Ancient and World coins highlights a strong run of over 50 examples of Chinese Panda Series coinage as well as many other modern Chinese issues. Additionally, a key date for the Panda Series gold 100 Yuan issues is featured as well. The obverse design shows a lackadaisical adult Panda lounging across a boulder while munching bamboo. A patch of bamboo fills out the field to the left of the Panda, with the denomination and metallic content appearing in the upper field: "100 Yuan / 1 oz Au .999." The reverse design includes the upper Chinese inscription stating: "People’s Republic of China," and below the design the date of issue, 1996. Between these legends is a detailed and magnificent view of the Temple of Heaven. Inside is the "Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests" which is aptly named, as the Ming and Qing dynasty emperors would enter this building at the winter solstice to beseech the gods for a bountiful harvest. From a mintage of just 1,500 pieces and unsurpassed in quality at either NGC or PCGS, this piece is sure to entice collectors.
