This preview for the Stack’s Bowers Galleries official auction of the August ANA World’s Fair of Money features another marvelous and desirable gold coin: a Colombian 1847 16 Pesos, the single finest certified example for the entire denomination. Additional interest is provided by the distinguished provenance; this superlative coin is Ex: R.L. Lissner Collection. The 16 Pesos denomination was a continuation of the 8 Escudos, and was produced to the same standards: 27 grams of .875 fine gold. Struck by the Republic of New Granada, this followed the early Republic of Colombia (also known as "Gran Colombia"). The obverse design features a left facing bust of Liberty wearing drapery and a headband (inscribed: Libertad). The date of 1847 appears below, with: "Republica de la Nueva Granada." around. The reverse utilizes a legend offering the denomination and mint location: "Diez I Seis Pesos. Bogota." The field is dominated by the arms of the Republic of New Granada: A condor flies above a shield, holding a laurel wreath. The shield is topped by a ribbon stating: "Liberty and Order." The first of three sections of the shield depict two cornucopias at either side of a pomegranate; the left cornucopia is filled with coins, the right with fruit. The middle section contains a liberty cap suspended on a spear. The lower section displays the Isthmus of Panama with a ship sailing above and below. This immaculate example looks as if it just left the mint, with near pristine surfaces and exceptional radiant luster.
