This week’s preview for the Stack’s Bowers Galleries
August ANA World Coin Auction is a rare and fabulous Swiss coin. It features a
lovely rendition of Helvetia, the female national personification of
Switzerland. She is named after the Helvetii, the Gaulish tribe inhabiting
modern Swiss lands at the time before Roman conquest, similar to Britannia and
Germania. Helvetia is commonly depicted wearing or sometimes holding a wreath,
which represents confederation. The obverse features a left facing head of
Helvetia wearing a wreathed crown. The reverse features the Swiss cross
emblazoned on a shield flanked on either side by a laurel branch and oak branch.
A single star above the shield, with “5” and “F,” represents the denomination. This
example is certified by NGC as a specimen strike and displays incredible
rainbow tone and choice prooflike surfaces.
We are currently
accepting consignments of world and ancient coins as well as world paper money
for our August 2018 ANA Auction, our October 2018 Collector’s Choice Online
