A newly discovered Fr.197a 1863 $20
Interest Bearing Note will be among the featured lots in the Stack’s Bowers
Galleries Official Currency Auction of the November 2017 Whitman Coin and
Collectibles Winter Expo.
The note, one of just 26 examples
of the catalog number known, is new to the census. It displays bold green and
red color and has vividly printed design elements featuring a depiction of
Victory at left, a portrait of Lincoln at right and a large mortar at bottom
center.
Moderate circulation is seen and
there is original embossing observed. PMG comments “Repaired, Split” in their
Very Fine 25 Net grade. Still the note is visually stunning and an excellent
example of this rare “Middle of the book type.” The note, lot #20330, carries
an estimate of $40,000-$60,000.
