Though the live sessions of the Stack’s Bowers 2015 December Hong Kong Showcase Auction have closed there are still many numismatic opportunities to be found in the Internet Only Session. Chinese Empire, Republic, Provincial and modern as well as other coins and medals from around East Asia and her sphere of influence can all be found in the Internet Session D, starting Monday December 14th at 7:30 PM PT. Included in that session are many treasures, such as this pleasing example of the Yuan Shih-kai Dollar issue from Year 3 (1914).
The obverse shows a left facing portrait of Yuan Shih-kai in his military uniform. The Chinese inscription that appears above Yuan Shih-kai’s bust provides the date and the issuing authority; “Republic of China, Third Year”. The reverse features two prominent Chinese characters meaning “One Dollar” vertical within an ornate wreath. Old envelope toning is seen with hues running the gamut from delicate iridescent lilac near the centers to deep maroon and navy blue at the periphery with underlying luster throughout.
