This
week’s featured highlight for our January 2017 Collectors Choice Online Auction
was produced on the cusp of the greatest worldwide economic disaster of the 20th
century – the Great Depression. This Gem 1929 Indian quarter eagle reminds us
that even amidst the dreariest of circumstances, exquisite beauty can always be
found. The surfaces are bright and glisten with satiny luster throughout. Even
the borders, sometimes blurred with fatigue, are attractive. The pearlescent
ivory-gold patina is accented by lilac and tangerine hues that are most vibrant
on the reverse. This thoroughly impressive piece will be just right for both
type collectors and Indian quarter eagle specialists.
The
1929 is the final date of the series and is somewhat underrated in terms of
rarity. Typically luster is attractive and frosty, though often hampered by
scattered abrasions in the fields; finding a clean example like the present
piece can be a challenge. The eye appeal of the 1929 quarter eagle is generally
above average, and patient searching will be rewarded with jewels like this offering.
While
examples are quite available through Choice Mint State, MS-64 coins command a
slightly bigger premium. However, in Gem this is a considerable condition
rarity, most resembling the 1909 or the 1915. Experts suggest that fewer than
500 pieces remain in Gem condition, stressing the true desirability of this
MS-65 example.
This
quarter eagle will be offered as part of the Campbell-Roberts Collection, a group
that includes nearly 50 of the most popular and desirable gold issues from the
early 20th century. The auction will be
available in its entirety for lot viewing at the FUN show in Ft. Lauderdale on
January 5-8, 2017, so be sure to stop by our table to take a look. To consign your collection to this exciting
