One of the highlights of our May 2021 US Currency Collectors
Choice Online Auction is a Fr.2405 1928 $100 Gold Certificate. This bright and
modestly circulated example has been graded Extremely Fine 45 by PMG. Darkly
printed engraved design elements are featured on this well framed gold note,
while bold golden yellow overprint inks are displayed on the face.
The iconic portrait of founding father and revered statesman
Benjamin Franklin is found at center. The engraving for the portrait was
originally done for the BEP by Charles Burt in the late 19th century,
at which time it appeared on notes such as the $50 Legal Tender Notes beginning
with the Series of 1874 and $10 Refunding Certificates from the Series of 1879.
The engraving was based on the 1778 portrait of Franklin by French artist
Joseph Siffred Duplessis. The engraving was modified slightly for inclusion on
small size notes including $100 Federal Reserve Notes and Gold Certificates for
the Series of 1928. The back features Philadelphia’s iconic Independence Hall, the
location where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution
where drafted and adopted.
This note is estimated at $1,250-$1,750. The entire May
