Appearing
in our December 2017 Collectors Choice Online Auction is an exceptional MS-67
(NGC) 1924 Peace dollar that ranks among the finest of the issue. Traces of
powder blue patina dust the surfaces of this incredible Superb Gem. The surfaces
are virtually pristine, and display uninterrupted mattelike luster across the
devices and fields. Well-struck and very appealing, both type collectors and
Peace dollar specialists will surely appreciate this beautiful treasure.
With
nearly 12 million examples struck, the 1924 Peace dollar is among the more available
dates of the series in most Mint State grades. These dollars were not needed
for circulation and the majority was placed into storage and remained there in
bags until they were distributed by the Treasury in the 1940s and 1950s. Bagmarks
and blemishes from careless storage and transportation mean that most are in
grades of MS-66 and lower. At the Superb Gem level like the current specimen, survivors
are considerably scarce. The present MS-67 example approaches the Condition
Census for the issue, as NGC has certified just three coins finer through
MS-68.

Superb Gem will be featured in our December 2017 Collectors Choice Online
