The 1907-S Liberty Head $10 eagle is well-known as a better
date in the series in Choice Mint State or finer grade, despite a relatively
generous mintage for the era of 210,500 pieces. Few such pieces have been
located in European bank hoards, and most examples are thought to have been
stored in government bank vaults until they were melted in 1937. Adding to the
appeal, this is the last San Francisco Mint issue of the long-running Liberty
Head eagle series, as in the same year the Indian Head eagle design by Augustus
Saint-Gaudens was started.
This beautiful premium Gem eagle displays outstanding
satin to softly frosted luster and lovely originality. Both sides are fully
struck with silky smooth, virtually pristine surfaces bathed in vivid
reddish-rose patina.
A review of the population reports at PCGS and NGC illustrates
the rarity of this issue in high grades. Only three Gems have been graded at
PCGS (two MS-66 and the present coin, a MS-66+) and two Gems at NGC (a single
MS-65 and a MS-66). There have only been 15 grading events in MS-64 or 64+ at the
two services combined. CAC has approved only two of these 20 examples, a MS-64
and the present coin. The example featured in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries
October Baltimore auction is extremely special and clearly the finest known.
If originality, rarity and beauty are important factors
when you purchase coins, this amazing piece has all of them with plenty to
spare. Registry set contenders and collectors that demand the finest should
take notice, as we suspect this coin will be tightly held for many years.
