In 1878 the Philadelphia Mint began a Proof-only policy for trade dollars, though the San Francisco and Carson City mints produced trade dollars in that year. The following year, 1879, saw an end to trade dollar coinage at every mint except the Mother Mint, and then only Proofs were made through the end of the series in 1883. (Clandestine Proof trade dollars dated 1884 and 1885 were struck sometime later, and are great rarities today.) The Proof 1879 trade dollar we offer in our upcoming iAuction event is graded Choice Proof-63 by PCGS. The quality and eye appeal of the coin are both superb for the assigned grade, and the coin is ideally suited for an advanced type set. There will be plenty of bidding activity in our upcoming iAuction, so plan accordingly, especially if this Choice Proof-only 1879 trade dollar is on your want list.
