A rare Gem Cameo Proof 1867 No Rays Shield nickel, struck from a pattern reverse die, will make its appearance in our upcoming June 26-27, 2014 Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo. Called Proof-66 Cameo by PCGS, this stunning Gem is the finest Cameo Proof of the date certified by PCGS, with no other Proof of the date certified finer by the California firm. On the reverse of this recently discovered rarity, first seen and used in pattern Shield nickels, the stars point between EN and TS in CENTS; on the “regular” Proof issues of the date, the stars point to the upright of the E and T in that word. This exciting rarity represents a “cross-pollination” of regular issue and pattern dies, and should appeal to both pattern specialists and Shield nickel collectors alike. Its rarity is high, and we suspect bidding activity will involve numerous specialists when the day of reckoning comes around for this rare issue.
