The 1866 With Motto is an important rarity in the Liberty Head eagle series. Though sometimes overshadowed by the popularity of the larger $20 double eagle of the same issue, the $10 eagle is exponentially rarer in an absolute sense and in higher grades. We are proud to present a Condition Census example of this desirable gold coin in our June 2018 Baltimore Auction, where it appears in lot 114.
This is a remarkably attractive rarity with satin to semi-prooflike finish on light orange-gold surfaces. Trivial bagmarks punctuate the fields, though none are individually distracting. A group of reeding marks in the lower right field will be helpful in tracing this piece through future cabinets. The technical quality reflects Mint State preservation in most respects. It is sharply struck throughout and adorned with frosty luster around the devices on both sides.
The 1866 issue is the first Philadelphia Mint Liberty eagle to feature the Motto design type; the addition of IN GOD WE TRUST to the reverse design stemmed from the religious revival that swept through the Union during the Civil War. With just 3,750 coins struck, the 1866 Motto $10 was an absolute rarity upon its inception, and heavy circulation and melting has only further reduced the population. The presently offered coin is among the finest of just 75 to 100 survivors, and it is tied with three other coins graded AU-58 at PCGS, with just one Mint State piece certified at MS-61.
This Condition Census 1866 Motto Liberty Head eagle is among the highlights of our June 2018 Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Summer Expo in Baltimore, appearing alongside rarities from collections such as the Beasley Collection, the Fairmont Collection, and the Boston Old City Hall Collection.
