The 1860-O is one of the most popular New Orleans Mint Liberty Seated dollars from the desirable No Motto period of 1840 through 1865. It was widely represented in the Treasury Department releases of 1962 to 1964, through which approximately 5,000 Uncirculated examples entered the market. Specialist Bruce Amspacher wrote about this issue: "the average BU 1860-O dollar earned the nickname of ‘Quaker Oats dollar,’ because it looks like it was shot from guns." An additional 11 Mint State examples were discovered in the chimney of an old New Orleans house in 1935 and brought to market in 1997, though many display dull luster from the less-than-ideal storage conditions.
