In distinction to the other beautiful quarter eagles set to cross the block in Part 1 of the D. Brent Pogue Collection, the 1807 quarter eagle is important for its availability. It is not common, but for the 1796 to 1807 $2.50 coins with stars on the obverse and the Heraldic Eagle reverse, the 1807 is the date most often seen. Accordingly the offered 1807, MS-65 (PCGS), is an opportunity for anyone building a high-quality collection of United States coins by design types.
And, in the grade offered, this 1807 is indeed a rarity. Although coins in VF, EF, AU, and even in lower-level Mint State, are offered with some frequency, this coin is the finest graded by PCGS! It is another old friend. A decade ago we sold it as part of the C.L. Lee Collection. This coin has richly lustrous medium gold surfaces and superb eye appeal.
Lagniappe or bonus: This reverse die was very durable and was used to strike quarter eagles dated 1805, 1806 (combined with two different obverses), and 1807, and dimes dated 1807 (variety JR-1).
Strategy, perhaps: Our sale also includes a marvelous 1807 JR-1 dime, lot 1050, which will cross the block earlier in the evening. Why not consider bidding on that as well as the related 1807 quarter eagle. What an interesting pair!
