Gem BU 1795 Half Dime Will Excite Bidders at the Official March 2015 Baltimore Auction

Stack’s Bowers Galleries is proud to present as part of our Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo, a lovely 1795 half dime, graded MS-65 by PCGS and housed in an old style green label holder and verified by CAC. This little beauty is richly toned in gold, blue, sea green and rose, and is highlighted by soft cartwheel luster. The strike is notably sharper on this example than usually seen, with bold definition of the hair strands and even some differentiation on the eagle’s breast.

Flowing Hair half dimes were the first type of the denomination, and both 1794 and 1795 dated examples were struck in 1795. Struck in sufficient quantity, examples can be found with some frequency in the numismatic marketplace, from low grade and damaged to pleasing EF grades. These become five figure items at AU, and are very scarce in Mint State. In Gem as here, the demand is far greater than the supply. Coins dated 1795 are more available than those dated 1794, and as such, the date is often used for type collection purposes. When this coin crosses the auction block in Baltimore, we expect that it will find a new home in an advanced type collection, whose owner will appreciate its high level of eye appeal.

Be sure to check out this lovely half dime and the rest of the items to be sold in our March Baltimore auction when it becomes available next month at StacksBowers.com.
