Superb Gem 1793 Wreath Cent

The terms “1793 Wreath cent” and “significant original mint red color” are rarely found in the description of a single coin. The D. Brent Pogue Collection 1793 S-9, certified as MS-67 RB by PCGS, is a marvelous exception! It is one of over 150 treasures scheduled to cross the auction block in February when Stack’s Bowers Galleries and Sotheby’s, the world-famous art house, hold another combined sale at Sotheby’s international headquarters in New York City. You are cordially invited to attend in person as a potential bidder or interested observer to watch history being made! Alternatively, you can participate or watch in real time with virtual imagery on our Internet site.

This landmark 1793 cent stands as one of the very finest early copper coins of any year. Well struck, including the hair strands, and with rich light brown lustrous surfaces, this cent is a treat to the eye. This coin will be ideal for an ultra-high grade type set and will be a showpiece among its companions.

It has been estimated that somewhat over 2,000 examples exist of S-9. All grades are highly collectible and in strong demand. Most in the marketplace range from G-4 to Fine-12 or so, although Very Fine and Extremely Fine coins cross the auction block with regularity. Mint State examples are occasionally offered, but nearly always are in lower numerical ranges such as MS-60 to 63. Even then, such coins are landmarks.

Not only is the 1793 S-9 Pogue Gem unique in its grade and appearance, it also includes the quintessential element of having been part of the “Ted” Naftzger Collection, the most extensive ever formed.
