IRVINE, Calif. (July 25, 2014) — Virtually every collector of United States coins will have a keen eye out for the upcoming August 2014 American Numismatic Association’s auction in Rosemont/Chicago, Illinois. The catalogs are out, fresh from the printer, and no doubt collectors have already thumbed through their catalogs numerous times. Certainly the Garrett specimen of the famous 1804 Draped Bust silver dollar has drawn a lot of attention. Another great rarity that will appeal to a broad range of collectors is the undated (1849) Miners’ Bank $10 gold piece. The Miners’ Bank pieces were found to be of lighter gold content than their face value, which resulted in wholesale melting of the firm’s coins in the early 1850s, creating one of the great rarities among the private gold issues of the California Gold Rush era. Specimen coins, those pieces that are so “special” in format and appearance that our terms of Mint State and Proof don’t apply, are represented in the sale by a Specimen 1794 half dime — the first year of the Flowing Hair design type — and a Specimen 1795 Flowing Hair silver dollar — from the second of only two years of that design type.
